Before you start, let’s break down the six essential parts of a complete skateboard setup. Understanding each piece is the first step in making informed choices for your ride.
The Deck: Your Foundation
This is the wooden platform you stand on. Decks come in various widths, lengths, and concaves. Wider decks offer more stability, while narrower ones are often preferred for technical street tricks. Consider your shoe size, height, and the type of skating you plan to do when choosing. A good starting point is usually 8.0" to 8.25" wide for most adult beginners.
Trucks: The Steering Mechanism
Trucks are the metal axles that attach to your deck and hold your wheels. They allow you to steer and grind. Crucially, your trucks’ axle width should match your deck’s width. For an 8.0" deck, look for trucks with an 8.0" axle. High trucks offer more clearance for bigger wheels, while low trucks are closer to the ground, good for stability and flip tricks.
Wheels: Your Connection to the Street
Skateboard wheels vary in diameter (size) and durometer (hardness). Smaller wheels (50-54mm) are lighter and better for technical street skating, while larger wheels (56mm+) are faster and smoother for cruising or vert. Softer wheels (lower durometer, e.g., 92A) absorb impact better and are grippier, ideal for rougher surfaces. Harder wheels (higher durometer, e.g., 99A) are faster and slide easier, perfect for skateparks and smooth street spots.
Bearings: The Speed Creators
These small, round components fit inside your wheels and allow them to spin freely. Each wheel requires two bearings. They come in ABEC ratings (ABEC-1, 3, 5, 7, 9), which measure precision, not necessarily speed or durability. For most skaters, ABEC-5 or ABEC-7 are perfect. Just remember, good maintenance is key to their longevity.
Hardware: Keeping It All Together
Hardware refers to the nuts and bolts that attach your trucks to your deck. A standard set includes eight bolts and eight nuts. Make sure the length of your bolts is appropriate for your deck thickness and if you're using riser pads (small plastic pads between the truck and deck to prevent wheel bite or raise your board).
Grip Tape: The Traction Provider
This is the sandpaper-like sheet that sticks to the top of your deck, providing essential traction for your feet. Most grip tape sheets are standard size, so pick one with a design that speaks to you or keep it classic black.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Assemble Your Skateboard

1. Applying the Grip Tape
Lay your deck on a flat surface. Carefully peel back one end of the grip tape backing and align the grip tape over your deck, ensuring it covers the entire surface with a slight overhang. Slowly and smoothly press it down, working from the center outwards to avoid air bubbles. Once applied, use a screwdriver or file to firmly trace the edges of your deck, creating a guide. Then, using a sharp utility knife, carefully cut along this guide to trim the excess grip tape. You can use the excess grip tape to sand down the edges for a cleaner finish.
2. Mounting the Trucks
With the grip tape side up, find the pre-drilled holes in your deck. Flip your deck over. Insert the eight bolts through the holes from the grip tape side. Make sure to tighten them in a cross pattern (like changing a tire) to ensure even pressure, but don’t overtighten and strip the bolts.
3. Installing Bearings into Wheels
Each wheel needs two bearings. Take one bearing and place it onto the axle of your truck. Then, press a wheel onto the bearing until it clicks into place. Flip the wheel over and repeat the process for the second bearing. Some wheels require a small spacer between the bearings – if so, insert it now. Repeat for all four wheels.
4. Attaching the Wheels to the Trucks
With the bearings in place, slide each wheel onto the truck axles. Secure them with the provided axle nuts. Tighten the nuts until the wheel is snug but still spins freely. You don't want them wobbling, but you definitely don't want them clamped down so tight they don't spin. A little wiggle room is good.
5. Adjusting Your Trucks
Stand on your board and feel how it turns. If it feels too loose, tighten the kingpin nut (the large nut on top of the truck's bushing) with your ACE CLASSIC SKATE TOOL BLACK.
